How to Find a Property in New Zealand

By Hans Fredrick, eHow Contributor Found This Helpful How to Find a Property in New Zealand thumbnail

If you are looking for a property in New Zealand--whether you are a resident of the country or a foreigner--you need to know the best places to look. Whether you are interested in a business, residential, or open-land property, there are specific resources to use to start your search. As with most real estate in the world, your best resources for finding a property in New Zealand are often online.

Instructions

  • 1. Check the official website for real estate listings in New Zealand at realestate.co.nz. The difference between this site and others that list properties in New Zealand is that in order to post a property on this site, the poster must be a licensed real estate agent in the country. Posters must be members of REINZ, the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. Properties both for rent and for sale can be found on this site.

  • 2. Find a real estate agent in New Zealand who can help you with your property search. Agents are going to be familiar with all of the available listings in their area, and can help you understand the process you will need to go through if you are buying a property as a New Zealand resident or as a foreigner. You can find an agent through a listing at the official listings site of realestate.co.nz, or browse the Internet for individual sites belonging to real estate agents in the area for which you have interest. Make sure any agent you do business with is a licensed member of REINZ.

  • 3. Tour the communities that you are interested in, and visit open houses. The open house is a popular method of selling a property in New Zealand. If you find an open house, it means you are simply invited to come and go as you please during the time the house is open.

  • 4. Check the listings for property auctions in New Zealand. Many properties are sold by auction now rather than through traditional methods. This may be because a bank has taken over a home and needs to auction it off, or because the sellers are trying to take advantage of the hot property market in New Zealand and hope to drive up the price of their sale. In either event, you can find many properties listed through auction services that you won't find in other listings.
