Information On Healthy Eating Fats

So much of the information on healthy eating surrounds the issue of fat. The fact is, most people eat too much of it. Not only too much, but the wrong kinds of fat as well. Information on healthy eating recommends that 20-35% of your daily caloric intake be from fat with a minimum of 10% on a low fat diet. Our body needs at least that much for fatty acids, to keep our skin soft, deliver fat-soluble vitamins, and they are a great source of energizing fuel.

We cannot cut out fat altogether, and fat alone is not responsible for the obesity epidemic worldwide. That said, dietary fat does play a significant role in obesity. Fat is calorie-dense, at 9 calories per gram, while carbs and protein have only 4 calories per gram, and alcohol has 7 calories per gram. What kind of fat is acceptable? Here is some information on healthy eating regarding the "good vs. bad fat".

The Bad

Any food containing trans fats should be avoided. Information on healthy eating recommends 20g of saturated fat or less per day on a 2, 000 calorie diet. Animal fat is the worst. Lard, butter or any other rendered fat should be avoided. Deep frying of foods; frying foods in butter or lard; fried bacon or other animal products in their own fats must be eliminated

The Good

Information on healthy eating tells us this: There are two classes of "good for you" fats: polyunsaturated fats, which include the much-touted essential fatty acids, which, in general terms, our bodies need but can't manufacture, and monounsaturated fats. Both types of unsaturated fats are thought to mitigate some of the harmful effects associated with saturated fats and trans fats. Omega-3s that are found in oily fish are another type of good fat that elevates the "good Cholesterol" in our blood and reduces our risk for cardiovascular diseases.

Information on healthy eating recommends using cold-pressed oils such as olive oil, sunflower and safflower oil, corn, soy and canola oil. These liquid oils should replace the animal fats in your diet. Whole nuts and seeds also contain these good fats, as do avocados and olives.

Take this information on healthy eating to heart and make heart-healthy changes to your fat intake. Remember that every fat calorie counts as 9 calories; so use your daily intake wisely and enjoy the good fats in life.
