What Is New About Alternative Treatment Of Sphincter Of Oddi Dysfunction?

Some scientists and doctors believe that the Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction (SOD) is a culprit of the various pancreas and gallbladder diseases, and it is the frequent source of chronic pain after gallbladder removal. The sphincter of Oddi is a strategic gate where pancreatic juice from pancreas and bile from liver go into the duodenum (beginning of the small intestine).

An Italian anatomist Ruggero Oddi described this muscle valve that controls the flow of pancreatic juice and bile in 1887.

The sphincter of Oddi valve stays closed if there is no food in the duodenum. At that time, bile is maintained in the gallbladder and pancreatic juice is kept in the pancreas. Blockage or spasms of this valve can cause bile and pancreatic juice to back up and pressure inside the pancreatic and bile ducts goes up. It can lead to pain and inflammation of the liver, gallbladder, and/or pancreas.

Furthermore, if a tiny amount of bile gets into the pancreatic duct, severe troubles can ensue. Bile can activate digestive enzymes within the pancreas. Premature activated enzymes start to digest their own pancreatic cells, causing pain, inflammation, congestion, and injury of pancreatic tissue. This can lead to as pancreatitis.

The numbers of the obstructions of the sphincter of Oddi by large gallbladder stones, scars after inflammation, tumors, or surgery are relatively small, but millions of Americans suffer from irregular transitory spasms of the sphincter of Oddi with upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gas and bloating. Pain precipitated by improper food mixture of protein, starch, fat, sugar foods or consumption of alcohol.

Often, tests are normal, and these patients get labeled with acid reflux disease, stomach flu, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), food or alcohol poisoning, dyspepsia or other diseases. Many of those individuals have type III Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction; the functional disease when the proper regulation of this muscle valve is broken. Most, it causes temporary spasms of the sphincter of Oddi.

Why does the sphincter of Oddi turn into spasmodic state? The answer may depend on many reasons if we take into account the extraordinarily complicated regulation of this muscle valve by the nervous system and special blood messengers - digestive hormones. Here are various patterns, which can make the sphincter of Oddi spasm:

  • Depression, anxiety and stress,
  • Alcohol, smoking, drugs, some medications
  • Hormonal imbalance such as lower thyroid function or menopause
  • Whole body acidity, when "aggressive" acidic bile with sludge, sand, gallbladder stones irritate the sphincter of Oddi
  • The Standard American Diet is jam-packed of processed, and acidic foods (meat, dairy, sugars, animal fats, alcohol, white flour, etc) causes the whole body acidity
  • Poor eating habits for instance "eating on the go", eating while watching television, driving, playing games, etc, irregular diets, dieting, fasting and wrong combinations of foods such as the combination of the fatty foods with sugars and alcohol
  • Chronic, mild pancreatitis
  • Deficiency of the vital minerals, essential trace elements, vitamins, etc

Frequently we can see combinations of these factors in predisposed individuals with sedentary lifestyles, overweight, and prolonged stress. Very common is the whole body acidity. In this case, the bile becomes acidic, as well. Bile acids in the bile are precipitated. Bile acids are unusually aggressive stuff; they irritate and corrode the walls of the sphincter of Oddi causing muscle contractions - spasms.

Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction can affect children, women, adults after age 40, overweight individuals and people after abdominal surgeries. For instance, medical statistics show that nearly 20% of individuals after gallbladder removal have the Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction.

Contrary to someone believe, harsh, intensive and repetitive "liver cleansing" with fasting can cause spasms, upper, right abdominal pains that are very suspicious to SOD. In my clinical practice I so after fasting and "liver cleansing" many inflammations of the pancreas. I strongly believe that liver cleansing with fasting is safe only for healthy young people.

The Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction without proper treatment can eventually cause severe complications like pancreatitis and gallbladder inflammation.

The healing course of the Sphincter Oddi Dysfunction type III may include the basic alternative medicine actions:

  1. Healing Customized Diet
  2. Nutritional Supplementation
  3. Drinking healing mineral water prepared from genuine Karlovy Vary spring salt
  4. Acupuncture
  5. Herbal Medicine
  6. Visceral Abdominal Massage
  7. Relaxation, Meditation, Hypnosis, Custom Hypnosis CDs

By our opinion, the goal of treatment has to be focus on the cause of problems such as biochemical, acidic changes in the pancreatic juice and bile. Normally, the bile and pancreatic juice are highly alkaline fluids with pH close to 8.0. However, if the whole body becomes acidic, the bile and pancreatic juice also happen to acidic and very "aggressive". I explain it in my eBook and articles.

Is your body acidic? Testing the saliva and urine pH with litmus paper at home may confirm acidic condition of the body particularly if saliva and urine pH time after time are less than 6.6.

What can naturally make the alkaline condition of bile and pancreatic juice?

Only minerals and bicarbonate from food, mineral supplements, and healing mineral water can naturally neutralize the whole body acidity.

European doctors have used healing mineral water extensively. Treatment with healing mineral water; balneology treatment is a part of training in various European medical schools. There are numerous healing mineral spas all over Europe. Most researched and popular mineral water is water from thermal spring in the small Czech town Karlovy Vary. Karlovy Vary healing mineral water brought attention of the thousand people all over the globe.

Demand of this water was so high; thus, the genuine Karlovy Vary thermal spring salt had manufactured there by vaporizing the spring water 250 years ago. It was a good opportunity for persons, which cannot visit Karlovy Vary or wanted to continue the healing course at home. Dissolving this salt in the warm water produces mineral water with the identical healing value.

Karlovy Vary healing mineral water has been an object for serious medical research for hundreds of years. European doctors proved that drinking mineral water keeps pancreatic juice and bile less acidic, liquid, and less "aggressive". This naturally improves digestion, reduces the pains and cramps, and diminishes gas and heartburn. This healing mineral water may dissolve the gallbladder stones and expel them. Karlovy Vary healing mineral water also is extremely beneficial for persons with sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, chronic pancreatitis, and hepatitis.

Healing approaches of alternative and holistic medicine can be used alone or as complementary actions to traditional medicine treatment.

He took specialized training in anesthesiology, intensive care, and internal medicine. Working as a physician he became interested in holistic healing through his clinical experience with herbs, acupuncture, healing mineral water and internal cleansing. He was granted a license to practice acupuncture in Russia in 1978, and from that time he combined conventional Western medical treatment with herbs, acupuncture, and other non-drug healing therapies. In 1975, Peter Melamed established Biotherapy as a natural holistic approach to healing. Biotherapy combines the wisdom of traditional Russian folk medicine, ancient Oriental medical therapies, and European naturopathy with cutting-edge Western technology. After immigrating to the USA and passing all the exams Peter Melamed, PhD succeeded in starting up a private practice in 1996 at the Biotherapy Alternative Medicine Clinic of San Francisco Bay Area.
