Canine Health Problems

By Linda Altukhov on May 22, 2010

Mom, my tummy hurts. Mommy, it's itchy. Mom, mooomm! If dogs could tell us that easily what is wrong, we would spend a lot less on vet bills! But since dogs cannot conveniently chit chat with their owner when something is wrong, we often forget that dog are also prone to various health problems. Of course there are the one that are exclusive to the dog only, but some conditions can actually be identical to ours. It is important to check your dog periodically for health problems. Here are two of the most common health conditions in dogs.

Fleas...
They are probably a pet's owner worst nightmare. Fleas and ticks are a real bane on your and your best friend's life. And if your dog is allergic to fleas (see below for allergies), you will have to stay on top of things to combat these little and so hated critters.

Fleas can be found anywhere, and even though you live in a city, far away from other pets and animals, you may still have to battle fleas on your dog. Fleas on dogs can be a real disaster to the dog owner as those bloodsucking bugs reproduce at a really fast pace and where there's one, there's a lot more of them!

What they do
The most exasperating thing with fleas, to the pet owner and the pet itself, is the fact that fleas are likely to thrive all year round. While mosquitoes are usually non-existent during the cold seasons, fleas have the ability to survive all climates. Indeed, up to sixty percent of fleas can survive without a living host as long as there is a humid and hot environment, and up to ten percent can even survive during the snowy months or when it's extremely dry. Fortunately, those 6 legs bugs have a hard time surviving in higher altitudes.

Other than the minor itching, scratching and biting, following an infestation with fleas, some dogs are hypersensitive to the saliva of the flea (or in other words, have allergies). Did you know that one single bite of a flea can lead to unbearable itching of flea-allergy dermatitis (FAD). In severe cases, too much itching following by extensive scratching and chewing of the skin can cause the dog's skin to thicken and its hair to fall out. Plus the raw skin now covered in sores becomes vulnerable to infections.

While dog flea bites are not usually a major health issue, fleas have been known to transmit tapeworms, heartworms, a parasite called Haemobartonellosis that can cause anaemia, the plague and Typhus or rabbit fever.

Canine allergies
Just like in humans, the occurence of allergies in pets is increasing every year. Allergies are caused by the allergic reaction to substances called allergens.

Symptoms
Unlike humans who react to allergens with nasal symptoms, dogs react with skin problems. These problems can range from poor coat texture or length, to itching and chewing, to hot spots and self injuries.

Problems
Moreover, allergies can create stomach and intestinal complications, including vomiting and even diarrhea, and other problems such as ear infections.

Cause
So what can cause your dog to itch and scratch? There can be a lot of reason. Food, pollen ... or else? There are many potential causes that you will need to assess to determine what is causing allergies in dogs. Use the work and error method. Start with the food. Replace the food with other brands or other ingredients, change its blanket, etc. By following these steps, you will diagnose and find proper treatment of the allergy more easyly.

So, keep in mind that your dog is susceptible to diseases, parasites and other health problems. It is important that you take care of your dog and provide your pet with quality treatments and food. If you think that your dog is sick or has some health problems, make an appointment with your vet, because early treatment will be cheaper. But we can never say it enough, prevention is the key to a good health. A dog is not just a pet, but also a new addition to your family, so it is important to treat him like family. Give your animal lots of care and your animal will make sure to let you know you are the most important person in its life.
